UVA lacrosse team
Always and Forever, Lara JeanThe UVA lacrosse team is the Division I college program that shapes Peter Kavinsky’s path after high school and becomes part of Lara Jean Covey’s imagined future with him. Peter’s early commitment gives him a nearly secure place at the University of Virginia, while his success makes his eventual departure consequential both to his high-school team and to the people who watch him play.
Recruitment and Commitment
Peter gave a verbal commitment to the UVA lacrosse team the year before the story’s college decisions, then applied early action in the fall. For an athlete in his position, the commitment made admission all but assured as long as his grades remained decent. The official acceptance arrived in January, and his mother celebrated with a party. Lara Jean baked a cake bearing the message, “I’m taking my talents to UVA in yellow frosting.”
That certainty distinguishes Peter’s college process from Lara Jean’s uncertainty about where she will be admitted. When she tells him it is easy to be relaxed about the University of Virginia because he is already in, his place on the team stands behind his confidence: his athletic commitment preceded the admissions decision and helped make his future feel settled.
Peter as a Player
At Peter’s high-school practices, Lara Jean sits in the stands doing homework. She does not know all the intricacies of lacrosse, but she knows when to cheer and boo, and she likes watching him play. Peter expects each shot to score, and usually it does. His confidence is matched by results, making his talent visible even to a spectator who does not understand every detail of the game.
He is also the only player on his team going to a Division I school. Coach White is already upset about what the team will look like after Peter leaves, a response that marks Peter’s achievement as both an individual opportunity and a coming absence for the people who play alongside him. His recruitment raises his prospects while underscoring the change his departure will bring to the high-school team.
A Possible Shared Future
Peter’s secure place at the University of Virginia becomes a point of contrast when Lara Jean does not get the outcome she hoped for. He tells her that she deserves to attend as well, then offers a transfer route as a way to imagine their futures converging: she could begin at William and Mary, the University of Richmond, or another four-year college, apply to transfer, and join him at the University of Virginia. His hope rests on the example of a former student who transferred there after two years at PVCC.
For Lara Jean, transferring had not occurred to her, and she is still adjusting to the idea that she will not initially attend the University of Virginia. Peter’s proposal temporarily makes the team’s destination more than his own college plan: it becomes a possible shared endpoint. Later, while talking with Chris, Lara Jean describes a plan of attending William and Mary for a year and then transferring to the University of Virginia. The plan captures the pull of Peter’s destination, although the evidence does not establish that she ultimately transfers or joins the team.
Narrative Significance
The UVA lacrosse team represents an opportunity Peter has earned through years of work, not simply a college name attached to his romance with Lara Jean. His commitment precedes the uncertainty around her admissions, and his performance explains why his high-school coach anticipates the team’s difficulty without him. At the same time, the University of Virginia’s place in Lara Jean’s plans shows how an athletic commitment can become an imagined solution to the couple’s separation after graduation. The team thus links Peter’s independent achievement to the emotional negotiations surrounding their different paths into adulthood.
